Lenawee County Michigan

Lenawee County is located in southeastern Michigan and has a population of over 92,000. According to the 1990 Census Bureau, the county’s ethnic/racial breakdown is as follows:

While the “other” category is not specified, the county has residents whose ethnic backgrounds are: Chinese, Japanese, Arab, Jewish, Filipino, and East Indian.

There are 27 public and private elementary schools within the county. The highest percentage of minority children and youth are enrolled in the Adrian and Madison Schools. Over 17% of youth in the Adrian Public Schools are of Latino/Hispanic backgrounds, and 2 to 3% are Black.

Lenawee is home to both Adrian College and Siena Heights University. Both institutions have influenced the community for decades. The largest city, Adrian, has a population of about 25,000, and is the county seat. Tecumseh, with a population of 8,700, is the second largest city. Lenawee County is the headquarters for Merillat Industries, Gleaner Life Insurance and Tecumseh Products. It is also the home of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, another vital community resource. Well-known cultural resources are the Croswell Opera House and the Adrian Symphony.
